Flagyl is used to treat a wide range of anaerobic bacterial infections as well as parasitic infections of the reproductive tract, abdomen and liver. Anaerobic microorganisms are capable of living in an environment with less or no oxygen at all.

What is Flagyl?

Flagyl is used to treat bacterial and protozoan (parasitic) infections but will have no effect against viral infections. They belong to a group of antibiotics that are known as nitroimidazoles and are effective in stopping the growth of bacteria and parasites alike.
Among the bacterial infections that it can cure include:
•    Bacterial Vaginosis caused by over growth of gardnerella species
•    Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
•    Anaerobic infections
•    Pseudomembranous colitis
•    Peptic Ulcer Disease
•    Dental Infection caused by bacteria
Among the Protozoan Infections that it can cure include:
•    Amoebiasis
•    Giardiasis
•    Trichomoniasis

Important information about Flagyl

•    Avoid alcohol consumption when taking this drug for at least 24hours and 3 days if you are using the capsule. Failure to do so may cause severe upset stomach, flushing, nausea and vomiting as well as terrible headaches.
•    Should be taken only as prescribed by the physician as it can cause symmetrical lesions in the brain if the amount of flagyl in the body reaches toxic levels.
•    Possibly causes Steven-Johnsons syndrome when taken with mebendazole.
•    Missing doses will most likely result to failed treatment.

Who should not use?

Before taking Diflucan, check with your doctor especially if you previously have or is currently suffering from the following:
•    A history of allergic reaction to Metronidazole and any of its components
•    During first trimester of pregnancy
•    Liver disease
•    Intestinal Disease
•    Crohn’s Disease
•    Blood cell disorder (leukemia etc.)
•    Seizures
•    Nerve abnormalities
•    Kidney Problems

How should I use/take Flagyl?

Take this medicine with a glass of water at regular intervals. Do not take this medicine more often than directed. It should be taken by mouth 2 or 3 times daily for 5-10 days or more depending on the severity of the problem. The length of treatment is solely under the Physician’s control and not by any person unqualified to give prescription.
Take all your medicine even if you are feeling better. Do not skip doses or stop using this medicine before your doctor allows you.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Missed doses are considered missed. Leave it and take the next scheduled dosage. Do not overdose to compensate for the missed one. If you remember and still with enough time before the next one, take it, if not then proceed with your regular dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose?

During unexpected and emergency situations, Call for help right away and notify your physician for such matter. You may contact a poison control center or have you taken to the nearest hospital for abrupt treatment; if the person is passed out and not breathing, call 911 or your local emergency response team.
Overdosed patients may experience hallucinations as well as experiencing strong fears that someone is out to harm you.

What should I avoid while using Flagyl?

•    Do not share this medication to anybody else without prescription.
•    Do not take together with mebendazole or at least consult your physician first.
•    Do not take alcohol together with this drug, for at least three full days after last taking it.

Flagyl side effect

Advise your physician if you experience one of the following: allergic reactions, such as skin rash or hives, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, confusion, sores or white pustules or blisters in the mouth, fever, infection, pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in hands and feet, painful urination, seizures, feeling unusually weak or tired, vaginal irritation or discharge.

The following side effects do not generally require special medical attention.

Consult your doctor if these symptoms persist or are bothersome: diarrhea, headaches, nausea, stomach pains or cramps. 

What other drugs will affect Flagyl?

Drug interactions have the tendency to change the effectiveness of either medicine.
•    Tagamet
•    Dilantin
•    Phenobarbital
•    Warfarin
•    Lithium
•    Antabuse
