Inderal-LA is drug used for treatment of High Blood Pressure. Patients with confirmed cases of angina are the ones that mostly given this drug in order to decrease the frequency of angina itself and at the same time increase the person’s endurance during exercise. Other cases that are treated by this drug include hypertrophic sub aortic stenosis as well as migraine.

What is Inderal-LA?

Inderal-LA is medically known as propranolol hydrochloride with a Long Acting (LA) capsules. It can be described as a stable, white and crystalline solid, which is water-soluble and soluble in ethanol as well. People who have suffered heart attack are given this type of medicine in order to increase the chances of survival.
The medicine takes effect by blocking and not allowing certain secretions and substances in the body to be released and blocking them in order to regulate its effect on the heart and blood pressure. Substances like epinephrine, once released by the body, will make the heart beat faster and increases the blood pressure. Inderal-LA will block the effects of epinephrine in order to keep the body calm and composed thereby not giving any added pressure to the heart.

Important information about Inderal-LA

•    This drug should be taken as a long-term maintenance medication to decrease the possibility of heart attacks or any coronary problems, as well as migraine. It should not be taken only on the onset of chest pain or migraine.
•    Never stop using this drug without consulting your doctor. Sudden stoppage may result to worsened condition and even death for patients with angina or heart disease.
•    If the doctor deems the patient fit enough to stop using this medicine, he will do so by gradually decreasing the amount given to the patient but never stop abruptly.
•    Avoid any strenuous physical activities when under gradually decreasing medication in order to prevent stress.

Who should not use?

Before taking Inderal=LA, check with your doctor especially if you previously have or is currently suffering from the following:
•    Depression
•    Cigarette or tobacco smoking
•    Muscle-wasting diseases (Myasthenia gravis)
•    Complete heart Block
•    Sinus Bradycardia
•    Liver Problems
•    Bronchospasm
•    Diabetes
•    Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
•    Tingling sensation on the fingers and toes
Do not take Inderal-LA if you are allergic to Beta Blockers or any of its ingredients.

How should I use/take Inderal-LA?

Take this medication orally, with a glass of water. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take this medicine more often than advised. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor first.
It can be taken with or without food and best taken everyday at the same hour so that it will not be forgotten.
It should be swallowed whole and not to be chewed or crushed.
Allow 2 hours allowance after taking Inderal-LA before taking any antacids that contains aluminum.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Missed doses are considered missed. Leave it and take the next scheduled dosage. Do not overdose to compensate for the missed one. If you remember and still with enough time before the next one, take it, if not then proceed with your regular dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose?

During unexpected and emergency situations, Call for help right away and notify your physician for such matter. You may contact a poison control center or have you taken to the nearest hospital for abrupt treatment; if the person is passed out and not breathing, call 911 or your local emergency response team.
Symptoms of Inderal-LA Overdose includes:
•    Slow heart beat
•    Severe dizziness
•    Shallow breathing
•    Unexplained weakness
•    Fainting

What should I avoid while using Inderal-LA?

•    Avoid driving or operating any equipment that requires alertness as the medicine could make you sleepy.
•    Avoid standing up right away if you have been sitting or lying down for some time to prevent dizziness.
•    Tell your doctor right away if you develop symptoms of high blood sugar like increased thirst, hunger and urination.
•    Limit consumption of alcoholic beverage when under medication of this drug.

Inderal-LA side effect

Advise your doctor immediately if you notice any allergic reactions (skin irritation, hives, swelling of the face, lips or tongue), in cases of difficulty breathing, if there are any changes in your blood sugar rate, if you have cold hands or feet, if you have difficulty sleeping and nightmares, dry skin, hallucinations, muscle cramps or weakness, slow pulse, swollen legs or ankles, vomiting.

Side effects that generally do not require medical attention are changes in sexual desire or performance, diarrhea, dry or burning eyes, hair loss, nausea, weakness or fatigue.

Drug interactions have the tendency to change the effectiveness of either medicine.
•    Verapamil
•    Epinephrine
•    Clonidine
•    Rifampicin
•    Lidocaine
•    Isoprenaline
•    Ergot alkaloids
•    Quinidine
•    Phenobarbital
•    NSAIDs
