Nexium is used for treating heartburn caused by gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) where there is a backflow of the stomach acid towards the esophagus, which could possible damage the tissues within.
Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition where it causes severe damage to the esophagus due to constant regurgitation of acidic stomach juices. Heartburns, when uncontrolled and untreated, will significantly damage the tissues surrounding the esophagus. Nexium can treat these symptoms and allow the esophagus to heal and as well to prevent further damage to it.
Nexium also prevents ulcers from developing on people that are taking Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as well as those ulcers caused by stomach bacteria. It functions by decreasing the acidity in the stomach by limiting the production of stomach acids (ATPase) in gastric parietal cells.
