Generic Names: Ketoconazole

The primary function of the drug is for the treatment of fungal infections. It eliminates fungi by preventing the formation of the fungal cell membrane.

What is Nizoral?

Ketoconazole is a potent anti-fungal drug that is used to treat a wide range of fungal infections on the skin and other parts of the body. It is a synthetic and broad-spectrum antifungal agent with inactive ingredients like:
•    colloidal silicone dioxide
•    corn starch
•    lactose
•    magnesium
•    stearate
•    microcrystalline cellulose
•    povidone
Their main function is to interfere with ergosterol production of the fungi, which is a vital part of all fungal cell membranes.

Important information about Nizoral

•    Nizoral has been associated with hepatic toxicity hence following the doctor’s advice is critical.
•    Taking nizoral together with terfenadine can cause serious cardiovascular adverse conditions.
•    Cisapride and nizoral when taken together could also cause ventricular tachycardia, fibrillation and torsades de pointes.
•    Nizoral should be taken with a full meal.
•    Must be consumed on the full course of doctor’s prescription.
•    Never to be taken with indigestion medicine on the same day with nizoral.

Who should not use?

Before taking Nizoral, check with your doctor especially if you previously have or is currently suffering from the following:
•    Patients with abnormal liver function tests
•    Liver problems
•    Under activity of adrenal glands
•    Hereditary drug disorders
•    Breastfeeding
•    Galactose intolerance
Do not take Nizoral if you are allergic to ketoconazole or any of its ingredients.

How should I use/take Nizoral?

In the treatment for skin, gastrointestinal and systemic infection, take one capsule once/day during meal. If there is no positive response, the dose can be increased to 2 capsules once/day, during meal.

In yeast infections: 2 tablet one time/day with food for a period of 5 days.

Generally this dosage should be followed without interruption for at least a week, after all symptoms have disappeared.

For hair infections, use for 1-2 months.

For nail infections, use from 6-12 months depending on nail growth speed (full growth of the affected nail is needed).

What happens if I miss a dose?

Missed doses are considered missed. Leave it and take the next scheduled dosage. Do not overdose to compensate for the missed one. If you remember and still with enough time before the next one, take it, if not then proceed with your regular dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose?

During unexpected and emergency situations, Call for help right away and notify your physician for such matter. You may contact a poison control center or have you taken to the nearest hospital for abrupt treatment; if the person is passed out and not breathing, call 911 or your local emergency response team.

What should I avoid while using Nizoral?

•    Alcohol as it could cause flushing, rash, swelling of the hands and feet.
•    Do not stop at the middle of the treatment phase even if symptoms have disappeared.
•    Terfenadine
•    cisapride

Nizoral side effect

Most common side effects caused by the treatment with Nizoral are: nausea, vomiting, stomachaches, and diarrhea.

Less frequent: headaches, menstrual disorders, dizziness, and photophobia.

Rarely: thrombocytopenia, alopecia, impotency, and increased intracranial pressure.

In case of overdose, gastric lavage must be performed.
