Brand Name: Norvasc
Generic Names: Amlodipine besylate
Norvasc is used to treat angina (chest pain). It is classified as a calcium blocker and acts as a smooth muscle relaxant in the arterial wall promoting lesser peripheral resistance hence significantly reducing blood pressure while increasing blood flow to the heart. It is primarily used to treat hypertension and coronary artery disease.
Amlodipine primarily serves to lower the blood pressure by relaxing the arterial wall of the blood vessels. This is to ensure that the heart does not need to “pump harder” just to make sure the blood makes full circulation. It eliminates the risks of chest pain or angina by making sure there is adequate supply of blood going to the heart. It is an effective medicine in lowering the risk of heart attack, stroke and even kidney problems.
