Propecia is a drug used to treat enlargement of the prostate gland like benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). If treatment is adequate, it will be able to delay or stop the need of prostate surgery. It is also widely used to treat hair loss in men, but not for women and children.

What is Propecia?

Propecia is widely used to prevent or treat male pattern hair loss as well as thinning out of hair on the scalp which results to receding hairline and balding on the top area of the head.
This drug works by blocking the production of hormones that causes the prostate to enlarge as well hormones in the scalp that stops growth of hair. Subsequently, it stops the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone.

Important information about Propecia

•    Strictly for men’s use only.
•    Can be absorbed by the skin hence it is important for women and children to stay away from the drug, even handling and preparation of it.
•    Can cause birth defects when accidentally exposed to women.
•    If contact has been made, wash hands or point of contact area with soap and water right away.
•    Improper use of this drug can severely increase the possibility of the individual to develop prostate cancer.

Who should not use?

Before taking propecia, check with your doctor especially if you previously have or is currently suffering from the following:
•    Liver disease
•    Abnormal liver enzyme tests
•    Prostate cancer
•    Bladder muscle disorder
•    Problems in the urethra
•    Problems in urination
Do not take Propecia if you are allergic to finasteride or dutasteride or any of its ingredients.

How should I use/take Propecia?

The recommended dose is of 1 mg daily and at the same time each day to limit the chance of forgetting to take it.
The capsule should be taken each day at the same hour, with or without food.
Propecia is not recommended in women, children and persons allergic to any substance of this drug.
If used to treat BPH, it will be able to control the situation but will not guarantee to treat it at all.
It is not also used to treat hair loss; it is designed to control it and will take around 3 months before you can see actual results. Stopping the treatment midway will increase your chances in failing the treatment.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Missed doses are considered missed. Leave it and take the next scheduled dosage. Do not overdose to compensate for the missed one. If you remember and still with enough time before the next one, take it, if not then proceed with your regular dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose?

During unexpected and emergency situations, Call for help right away and notify your physician for such matter. You may contact a poison control center or have you taken to the nearest hospital for abrupt treatment; if the person is passed out and not breathing, call 911 or your local emergency response team.

What should I avoid while using Propecia?

Avoid getting up instantly if you have been lying or sitting down for a long period of time. This drug can make you dizzy making you lose control and possibly faint.

Propecia side effect

Minor side effects includes:
•    Temporary impotence
•    Decreased libido
•    Decreased volume of seminal fluid
•    Testicular pain
More serious side effect includes:
•    Abnormality of the breast in men (lumps, pain, nipple discharge)
•    Rash
•    Itching
•    Hives
•    Swelling of lips and face
•    Prostate cancer
•    Breast cancer

What other drugs will affect Propecia?

Drug interactions have the tendency to change the effectiveness of either medicine.
•    There are no known drug that can interact with propecia
