Brand Name: Zantac
Generic Names: Ranitidine
Zantac is primarily used to treat ulcers and gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) which is characterized by back flowing of stomach acid to the esophagus causing immense burning sensation on the chest area or heartburn. It is also used to treat Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome where the stomach produces too much acid.
Zantac is classified as an H2 (histamine-2) blocker drug, which primarily functions to decrease the production of acid in the stomach by altering the function of acid-producing cells. Histamine is a natural enzyme found in the stomach that stimulates the production of acid by the parietal cells. And by blocking this function, it helps to minimize the amount of acid in the stomach.
This drug is also proven effective in preventing ulcer recurrence when taken at low doses for prolonged periods of time.
