Zithromax belongs to a group of drugs called macrolide antibiotics that primarily functions to stop the growth of certain bacteria. They are potent drug for treating bacterial infections like bronchitis, pneumonia and sexually transmitted diseases.

What is Zithromax?

Zithromax is related to erythromycin. It is a potent drug against bacteria in the body but are not effective against cold, flu and other viruses. They are widely used to treat middle ear infection for the children as well as tonsillitis, strep throat and in some cases even pneumonia.
This drug can also be used in treating sexually transmitted vaginal infections as well as urinary tract infections caused by chlamydia species.

Important information about Zithromax

•    Does not work against fungal, viral and parasitic infections.
•    Must be taken the full course of treatment period given by the doctor. Doing otherwise will promote recurrence of the infection.
•    Never should be taken with antacids within two hours of each other as antacids are known to lessen the effects of the drug
•    Can affect the normal heat QT rhythm

Who should not use?

Before taking Zithromax, check with your doctor especially if you previously have or is currently suffering from the following:
•    Kidney problems
•    Liver disorder
•    Muscle wasting disease
•    Heart problems
•    Long QT syndrome
•    History of irregular heart beat

How should I use/take Zithromax?

Take this medicine orally with a glass of water. Leave at least 12 hours between doses.
Zithromax can be taken with or without food. In case of an upset stomach, take food together with the drug.
It is important to take this medicine at regular hours.
Do not take it more often than necessary.
Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, finish treatment with Zithromax even if you feel you are cured.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Missed doses are considered missed. Do not attempt to double the dosage. Take the next scheduled dose instead. Never take extra medicine.

What happens if I overdose?

During unexpected and emergency situations, Call for help right away and notify your physician for such matter. You may contact a poison control center or have you taken to the nearest hospital for abrupt treatment; if the person is passed out and not breathing, call 911 or your local emergency response team.

What should I avoid while using Zithromax?

•    No antacids for at least two hours after taking the drug.
•    Makes your skin sensitive to sunlight hence makes you easier to get sunburn.

Zithromax side effect

Inform your doctor immediately if you notice one of the following side effects: dark yellow or brown urine, difficulty breathing, rash, itching, palpitations, chest pain, vomiting, yellowing of the eyes or skin.

Side effects that usually do not require special medical attention are: diarrhea, drowsiness, dizziness, hearing loss, headache, increased sensitivity to sun, nausea, stomach pain or cramps, fatigue, irritation, itching or discharge.
